Ducted systems

Ducted heat pump replacement

Many San Marcos houses already have a central system. The ducts are either an asset or the reason the new equipment will disappoint you.

This is an independent referral guide. It connects homeowners with independent providers and may receive compensation. It is not a licensed contractor and it does not do the work.

The ducts are part of the system

A ducted replacement swaps the outdoor unit and the air handler and keeps using the duct network. That is the right path when the ducts can move the air the new system needs. It is the wrong path when a back bedroom in San Elijo Hills or Discovery Hills has always been the uncomfortable room and nobody has looked at the run that serves it.

Older houses near Grand Avenue and Mission Road often have ducts that were sized around a gas furnace. A heat pump can want different airflow. Ask the provider to say, in writing, whether the ducts stay, get sealed, or get replaced in part. 'We will see' is not a scope.

  • Rooms that are too hot or too cold today
  • Returns that are noisy or starved
  • Ducts in a hot attic and whether they are insulated
  • Filter location and whether a closet air handler has room to service

Do not skip the outdoor unit

Even a ducted job still puts a fan coil outside. Side yards in tract neighborhoods can be tight. An association in a planned community may care where it sits. Ask for the sound rating and the distance to bedrooms. This site will not invent a decibel number for your model.

Questions on this service

If the ducts look fine, are they fine?

Not always. Leaks, crushed runs, and an undersized return do not show up in a glance from the hallway. Ask how the provider checked airflow, not only the age of the equipment.
