Conversion

From a gas furnace to a heat pump

A conversion is not a like for like swap of one box. The heating fuel, the air handler, and often the electrical service all move.

This is an independent referral guide. It connects homeowners with independent providers and may receive compensation. It is not a licensed contractor and it does not do the work.

Name the system you have now

A lot of inland North County houses still heat with a gas furnace and cool with a separate air conditioner. Replacing only the air conditioner leaves the furnace in place. A conversion removes that split and makes the heat pump do both jobs. If the house already has a heat pump, you are on the replacement page, not this one.

Lake San Marcos has many single story houses from earlier decades. Some still have that furnace plus air conditioner pairing. Newer two story houses in San Elijo Hills may already be heat pumps. Do not buy a conversion scope for a house that does not have a furnace.

  • Whether a gas furnace is actually there
  • What happens to the gas connection, in the provider's words
  • Whether the ducts and the thermostat change
  • Whether the electrical panel has room
  • Which permit counter has the parcel

Money talk without fake rebates

A conversion can cost more than swapping one failed part, because more of the system changes. This site will not publish a package price or a rebate. San Diego Gas and Electric is the local electric utility. Any incentive program is their current offer, or a state offer, and it can change. Read it before you count on it.

Questions on this service

Can I leave the gas line as it is?

Ask the provider what happens to the gas connection. Do not treat this guide as instructions to disconnect gas. A qualified person has to handle that work.
